Coronavirus fallout: Saudi Arabia to raise VAT threefold amid 'painful' austerity measures

Saudi Arabia is suspending the cost of living allowance and raising the value added tax threefold, as part of measures aimed at shoring up state finances, battered by low oil prices and a severe coronavirus-driven slowdown.
 
"Cost of living allowance will be suspended as of June first, and the value added tax will be increased to 15% from 5% as of July first," the state news agency reported in a statement on Monday.

The number of coronavirus cases in India jumped to 67,161 and the death toll rose to 2,212 by Monday, according to Worldometer data. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold another meeting with chief ministers (CMs) of all states on Monday. He is expected to discuss the plan for exit from the ongoing nationwide lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

From today, Indian Railways will resume booking passenger train tickets on the IRCTC website. Nearly two months after it suspended its passenger operations in view of the coronavirus-induced lockdown, the Indian Railways will gradually restart its passenger train operations starting May 12.

Coronavirus India Live Updates: No coronavirus case has been reported in 10 states and Union territories in the last 24 hours and the recovery rate has increased to over 30 per cent, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said on Sunday, even as the COVID-19 deaths rose to 2,109 and the number of cases to 62,939. Mr Vardhan asserted that India was moving fast on the path of success in the fight against the pandemic.

Coronavirus news: Limited passenger trains from tomorrow, online bookings to start today

Indian Railways plans to restart passenger trains in a phased manner from Tuesday, five days before the end of the national lockdown to break the coronavirus chain of transmission, according to a statement released on Sunday. Ticket bookings will be opened from 4 pm today, with these to be sold only via the IRCTC website or mobile app. Booking through ticket agents (whether IRCTC or Railways) is not permitted. Counters at all stations, including those for platform tickets, will remain closed.
