What is TRP? – Parliamentary panel on IT to look in to TRP manipulation.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology which is chaired by the Congress MP Shashi Tharoor will look into the TRP issue and take it into parliament as per the sources. The panel is taking up the issue seriously and it will be discussed in detail.

Background

Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh recently in a press conference said that police are probing a scam on manipulation of Television Rating Points (TRPs) by checking the devices used by the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India to decide the rating.

Television Rating Points (TRPS)

TRPs provide the data regarding the number of people, their socio-economic categories, the channels they watch and the number of times or hours or days or even a weeks they have watched a particular channel. For the analysis, India follows the international standard of one minute. The data obtained from the device is made public every week. For the data not the entire country is surveyed. But, it is based on what  45,000 households are watching.

TRP calculation

For the TRPs, BARC installs BAR-O-meters in some 45,000 households. These households are classified into 12 categories under the New Consumer Classification System (NCCS) which was adopted by BARC in 2015. The households are classified on the basis of main wage earner and the ownership of consumer durables from a list of 11 items including electricity connection and car. The consumers need to press their viewer ID button to register themselves while watching a show. It  thus capture the duration for which the channel was watched. And accordingly, ranking and rating is decided.

BARC

It is an industry body. It was created in 2010. But the I&B Ministry notified the Policy Guidelines on January 10, 2014 and registered the BARC in July 2015. It is owned by advertisers, ad agencies, and broadcasting companies jointly. The body is represented by The Indian Society of Advertisers, the Indian Broadcasting Foundation and the Advertising Agencies Association of India.
